Wright homers as Mets beat Rockies again

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- David Wright and the New York Mets are sprinting to the finish.

Wright hit his sixth homer in eight games and Jae Seo pitched six effective innings as the Mets defeated the Colorado Rockies for the 10th straight time at Shea Stadium, 3-1.

New York fell out of postseason contention by losing 16 of 20 games in late August and September, but has rebounded by winning 11 of its last 13 and will seek a sweep of the season-ending, four-game series Sunday afternoon. The Mets (83-78) already are assured of their first winning record since 2001.

Wright is enjoying a strong end to his first full season in the major leagues. He belted his 27th homer after a two-out single in the fourth by Cliff Floyd , giving New York a 3-1 lead and raising his RBI total to 102.

Seo (8-2) won for the first time in five starts, allowing one run and six hits while working out of a pair of jams in the fifth and sixth.

Clint Barmes fouled out with runners on second and third to end the fifth. The Rockies loaded the bases with one out in the sixth before Luis Gonzalez hit a shallow fly ball to center field and J.D. Closser struck out.

Juan Padilla pitched two scoreless innings and Roberto Hernandez worked around a two-out single in the ninth for his fourth save.

Rookie Mike Esposito (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Closser doubled in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cory Sullivan to open the scoring.

The Mets tied it in the bottom half when rookie Anderson Hernandez walked and came home on a double by Jose Reyes .

Mike Piazza received a standing ovation from the crowd of 36,385 before striking out as a pinch hitter in the sixth. The series likely will mark the end of the Mets' tenure for Piazza, a 12-time All-Star who is in the final year of his contract.

Colorado's Matt Holliday singled in the sixth and has reached base in 21 consecutive games.
