Mental mistakes cost Devil Rays against Orioles

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- Damon Hollins and Carl Crawford gave Lou Piniella a little reminder of why he wanted out of Tampa Bay.

Hollins allowed a run to score when he threw a sacrifice fly into the stands in the seventh inning and Crawford ended a potential rally in the ninth by getting thrown out while trying to steal third base as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays dropped a 4-3 decision to the Baltimore Orioles .

On Friday, the Devil Rays officially announced that they would buy out the final year of Piniella's contract, allowing the manager to pursue other job opportunities after this season.

The Orioles took a 3-2 lead on Melvin Mora 's solo homer in the sixth and added an insurance run when Hollins lost track of the number of outs one inning later. David Newhan led off the frame with a bunt single and advanced on a sacrifice.

Eric Byrnes followed with a drive into foul territory in left field that Hollins chased down before flipping the ball into the stands, letting Newhan race around from second to score.

"I just thought there were three outs, my mistake," Hollins said. "I threw it up, I took three or four steps in and saw the infielders looking at me like I was a ghost. That's when I knew I did something wrong. It was on me today. I've got to take responsibility."

"I went halfway and saw it was going out of play so I went back to tag up," Newhan said. "When I saw him hang over the rail, I ran to third and I just kept on going when he started just jogging in. ... Yeah, I was surprised, but it happens."

Baltimore interim manager Sam Perlozzo credited Newhan for not giving up on the play.

"That was a heads up play," Perlozzo said. "David is always in the game. He knew exactly what was going on."

The Devil Rays scored once in the eighth and Aubrey Huff drew a leadoff walk from Orioles closer B.J. Ryan in the ninth. The speedy Crawford pinch ran and went to second on a wild pitch, but made the first out of the inning three pitches later when he did not beat catcher Geronimo Gil 's throw to third base.

Ryan issued another walk before retiring the next two batters for his 14th straight save and 36th in 41 chances overall.

Rodrigo Lopez (15-12) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings for Baltimore. The righthander walked two and struck out one to match his career high for wins.

"I went in wanting to work on the breaking stuff and I did just that," Lopez said. "It's nice to get the win, but we wanted to do a lot more as a team."

Tampa Bay starter Mark Hendrickson (11-8) went the distance, yielding four runs - three earned - and eight hits for his first loss since July 20.

"I'm real proud of the streak I had," Hendrickson said. "We had our chances, and it just didn't work out tonight. I'm proud of the month of September we've had."

The complete game was the first for the Devil Rays since Rob Bell did it on this date last year.

Sal Fasano hit a solo homer in the fourth - his 10th - for Baltimore, which won consecutive games for the first time since winning four straight September 10-13.

"It was a fastball and I was struggling with the breaking stuff," Fasano said. "It was nice to get that 10th one."
