Mora hits two-run homer as Orioles edge Devil Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- Melvin Mora added to what was a long day for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays .

Mora belted a two-run homer and Luis Matos also knocked in two runs, lifting the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-6 victory over the Devil Rays .

Earlier Friday, the Devil Rays officially disclosed that they were buying out the final year on manager Lou Piniella 's contract. The buyout had been know for sometime.

"It is evident by the team's play in the second half of the season that this club is moving in the right direction," Piniella said. "With this core group of young players and other promising talent coming up through the minors, the future is bright for the Devil Rays ."

"It was emotional more than surprising," Devil Rays outfielder Carl Crawford said of Piniella's decision. "We understand and we're just rolling with it."

Mora's 25th homer with with one out in the fourth inning off Doug Waechter (5-12) gave the Orioles a 6-5 lead. Rookie Bernie Castro had delivered an RBI single earlier in the inning.

"I was looking to go the other way and got a slider," Mora said.

Chris Gomez added an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth for Baltimore, which won for just the second time in 13 games.

Matos helped get the Orioles off to a good start, delivering a two-run double to cap a three-run first inning.

Eric DuBose (2-3) picked up the win, working 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of ineffective rookie starter John Maine .

"I threw a lot more cutters, that kept them from diving out over the plate and that made my changeup more effective," DuBose said.

Tim Byrdak , Chris Ray and Todd Williams bridged the gap to closer B.J. Ryan, who retired the side in order in the ninth for his 35th save in 40 chances.

Waechter was ripped for six runs and seven hits in four innings. The righthander walked two and struck out three.

"I'm sick today," Waecter said. "My body has been just a little fatigued. My arm was dragging and I left a lot of balls up."

Aubrey Huff belted a three-run homer in the third, giving Tampa Bay a 5-3 lead.
