Royals wrap up miserable year at Toronto

Kansas City (56-105) at Toronto (79-82), 1:07 pm EDT

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The end mercifully is here for the Kansas City Royals .

The Royals conclude their worst season in franchise history Sunday when they take on the Toronto Blue Jays in a matinee at Rogers Centre.

Kansas City set a new franchise record for losses with a 10-1 setback to Toronto in Friday's series opener. The Royals have been especially pitiful on the road, going 22-58, including losses in 13 of their last 18 games away from home.

The Royals have become the first team to lose at least 100 games in three out of four seasons since Toronto since 1977-79. However, Kansas City can still conclude its season with three wins in its final four games with a victory Sunday.

Runelvys Hernandez (8-13, 5.35 ERA) takes the ball for the Royals as he looks for his first win since July 22 vs. Toronto. He has gone 0-3 with an 8.91 ERA in his last eight starts since, a span which also covers a 24-game stint on the disabled list and a 10-game suspension for inciting a brawl in Detroit.

The Dominican righthander is 1-2 with a 3.65 ERA in four career starts against the Blue Jays , including a 1-1 mark with a 4.09 ERA in two starts this season.

Toronto gives the nod to Gustavo Chacin (12-9, 3.82), who looks to end his impressive rookie season with a victory. The 25-year-old lefthander went 5-0 with a 2.97 ERA in July, but has posted a 1-4 mark with a 4.89 ERA in 11 starts since.

Chacin, who never has faced the Royals, is coming off a pair of rough starts in which he yielded a total of 10 runs and 17 hits in a combined eight innings vs. Seattle and Boston.

The Blue Jays , who already have far exceeded their 2004 win total of 67, have won four of their last five games to move within one victory of their sixth 80-win season in the last eight years.
